Frequently Asked Questions — Artwork and Customization Issues

Frequently Asked Questions — Artwork and Customization Issues
What is “Logo insertion”?
Add-logo faced clocks allow you to insert your logo, image or text into the clock face.
Most companies / sites have designed a logotype (a shortened logo) — a graphic symbol representing the company or brand. This logotype can appear in different places on our PromoClocks. The process of inserting the logotype will probably involve resizing the image so it can fit the appropriate space in the clock.
If you don’t have a logo, now may be the time to create one. But perhaps you have another image you wish to insert into your PromoClock. That’s fine. Any graphic representation or symbol — even just a company or site name, name of the product or service, trademark, abbreviation — may be inserted into PromoClock. For example, a company called First Travel Inc. may wish to insert:
firsttravel.com
You could even insert a message you want pass on to your visitors/customers in order to get their attention. For example, First Travel Inc. may wish to insert:
Business Trips
VACATIONS

The inserted image must be a maximum of 100 x 80 pixels. What is a pixel?
A pixel is the basic unit into which a graphic image is divided.
Any graphic software used for creating/preparing images will tell you the exact pixel size of a given image. Most programs allow you to re-size images to a specified pixel size without losing proportion.

Why do you limit image size?
In designing our PromoClocks, we had to designate a pre-built zone for inserting images.
The size of this zone could not be changed upon finalization of the clock's design. Therefore, the space for insertion of images on the clock is limited.
We've made every effort to provide adequate space for legible images on all our clocks. We're confident that you'll be able to re-size your image to fit the space provided, or create an image that fits.

What does “Transparent Background” mean?
This option enables you to coordinate the style and color of your logo with your PromoClock. If your logo normally has a colored background, the “Transparent Background” will remove that color and the logo will appear as though placed directly on the clock.
If the logo's colored background goes well with the clock design, you can leave the “Transparent Background” option unchecked. In general, we suggest that you produce a version of your logo with style and colors that harmonize with your PromoClock.

Image must be BMP (Bitmap). What does that mean?
The BMP (standard Windows Bitmap) file format is one of the most commonly used graphic formats.
All graphic programs — such as Paint, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, etc. — allow you to save images in the BMP format or convert an image to that format from another.

How do I know that my image files are BMP files?
To check the file type of an individual image, right click it and choose Properties from the context menu. If you wish to choose a BMP file from a long list of image files, enable file extensions in Windows Explorer. Choose Tools > Folder Options > View. Clear the «Hide file extensions for known file types» checkbox.

You require 16-bit (or higher) color depth. What is that?
Bit depth is the number of bits used to store information about each pixel. The higher the depth, the more colors are stored in an image. For example with 16 bit color, a total of 65536 colors is available. When you have 24 bit color, a total of 16777216 colors is available.
Bit depth refers to the bit depth of an image, meaning that the image may contain the specified number of colors. 16-bit depths are known as “thousands of colors” or High Color. 24-bit is known as “millions of colors” or True Color.
We recommend setting your images at 16-bit or higher color depth for the best possible quality of your clock and logo.

What are WAV files?
The WAV sound file format, also known as ’wave’ and ’Microsoft sound format’, are Windows files that are used to save and record short sound clips.
Almost every automatic usage sound that your computer plays is a WAV sound file.
It’s very easy to record your voice to sound wav file from microphone.

How do I know if my sound files are WAV files?
To check the file type of an individual sound file, right click it and choose Properties from the context menu. If you wish to choose a WAV file from a long list of sound files, enable file extensions in Windows Explorer. Choose Tools > Folder Options > View. Clear the «Hide file extensions for known file types» checkbox.

How can I create an icon file?
You will need an icon editor.
An icon editors that allows you to convert images from .bmp to ICO formats will enable you to create your icon in any image editor program first, save it as a BMP file, and then import it to an icon editor. Icons must be saved in the icon format, with an “ICO” file extension.
A suggestion: When just starting out, try using the free, 21-day trial version of Microangelo 5.5 for creating or editing icons, downloadable here.

What is a Tray Icon file?
The System Tray is located in the Windows Taskbar — part of desktop that displays active programs (usually at the bottom right-hand corner next to the clock). The miniature icons located there provide easy, one-click access to system functions such as printer, modem, etc.
You can also place minimized desktop icons in the Icon Tray.
You can place your miniature icon in the icon tray to appear alongside the most important and commonly used computer applications.
Icon limitations
Microsoft recommends that your tray icon
  • must be exactly 16×16 pixels in size
  • must contain not more than 16 colors (only colors specified in the icon editor may be used)
